Three students from Middlesbrough College Sixth Form have been offered places to study on competitive and coveted degree programmes in Medicine and Veterinary Science. Getting a place at a Medical School is extremely difficult with thousands of talented students applying every year, but Izaak Lojko, Nicole Olagesin and Melissa Wright from Middlesbrough College have all gained offers from a string of top universities.

Izaak Lojko, a former Outwood Academy Bydales pupil, is studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form and is predicted to gain ‘A*’ and ‘A’ grades in his subjects. As an aspiring doctor, Izaak was thrilled to receive offers to study Medicine at Sheffield University, Birmingham University and his desired University, Hull York Medical School.

Izaak said “I’m over the moon to have been offered a place to study Medicine and I’m excited to be one step closer to fulfilling my career goal of becoming a doctor.

“I chose to study at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form because the College had an excellent reputation and I really liked the atmosphere when I came to an Open Event.

“I would definitely recommend studying here. Every member of staff has been so supportive and the teaching has been fantastic. The careers team have been brilliant and the College has helped me put together my application and prepare me for the tough interview process for my Medicine degree.

“I’m delighted to say that the interviews went smoothly and I can’t thank the team from Middlesbrough College enough for everything they have done for me. The College also supported me to gain relevant and worthwhile work experience which really helped give me application an edge and allowed me to stand out from the crowd.”

Classmate Nicole Olagesin, a former Acklam Grange student, is also celebrating after gaining an offer to study Medicine at Newcastle University. Nicole studies A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form.

She said “I wanted to come to Middlesbrough College after taking part in a taster day when I was in secondary school. I was really impressed with the College and the teaching so I decided to study for my A Levels here.

“My career dream is to become a Paediatrician and I’m thrilled that I have been offered a place at University to make this dream become a reality.”

Recently Nicole was also awarded the Gold medal in the Royal Society of Biology’s Olympiad. The British Biology Olympiad is open to students around the UK with over 9,500 students entering the competition every year. As part of the Olympiad, students have to complete two tough online examinations which go beyond the A Levels syllabus taught in College. Nicole received the highest award for this competition, coming in the top 6%!

Melissa Wright, a former Huntcliff School student, decided to come and study at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form after initially studying at Prior Pursglove College. As an aspiring Vet, Melissa wanted to boost her grades and was recommended to Middlesbrough College by a friend. Now, with ‘A’ grade predictions in Biology and Chemistry, Melissa has been offered places at Harper Adams & Keele Medical School and Liverpool University to study Veterinary Science.

Melissa said “I decided to come to Middlesbrough College as I wanted a change. It was one of the best decisions I have made. I would definitely recommend coming to study here. My favourite subject is Biology- my tutor, Doctor Richard Spencer or ‘Doc’ as we call him is brilliant. He brings the subject to life and is full of enthusiasm.

“I’m so happy that I have offers to study Veterinary Science at University and I’m excited about the future! I can’t thank Middlesbrough College enough for all their help and support.”

Doctor Richard Spencer, Head of Science at Middlesbrough College, said “I’m thrilled for Izaak, Nicole and Melissa. They all work so hard and make the most of every opportunity. They are all studying challenging A Levels but they are excelling in their subjects. I know that they will make excellent medics in the future.”
