Meet Zara, Level 3 Music Practice student!
For Zara, music has always been in the background of her life. She was originally planning to study Art, however found herself constantly drawn to music, music videos, and live performances.
It was this curiosity that led Zara to explore Middlesbrough College’s Level 3 Music Practice course, and after comparing it to other colleges, she was sold. The hands-on modules and practical approach to learning was exactly what she was looking for – and she hasn’t looked back since!
Zara said: “I really enjoy it. The course helps you figure out what and who you want to be which, as a musician, is extremely important.”
“There are so many opportunities to perform both inside and outside of the College, and because of that, I’m so much less nervous to do so. It’s built up my confidence massively.”
As a vocalist, Zara has found the course especially insightful. It has taught her not just how to perform, but how to perform in an engaging way.
“You start out in bands, learning how to collaborate – which is crucial in the music industry. I’ve also learned how to fill a stage and make a performance exciting. You really discover who you are as a musician on this course.”
And for Zara, the opportunities don’t stop there. The course has also given Zara valuable, hands-on work experience in a range of fields, helping her explore different areas of the music industry.
“I’ve gained work experience as a radio host, helped organise a gig at the Town Hall, and gained experience in a range of different music venues – all set up by the College. These experiences have helped me understand the industry.”
Zara now has big plans for her future, with plans to progress to Sheffield University to study Music Practice and Korean Studies.
However, before that comes around, she is taking on an exciting new role as a music tutor, teaching guitar and piano to primary school students – an opportunity she is really excited about.
“This course has given me confidence, skills, and so many opportunities. You get to explore what you love, but also discover new possibilities within music.”
“The music staff are so special, they support every student, listen to any worries, and genuinely want you to succeed. The work placement and wellbeing staff are also fantastic.”
For anyone considering studying Music at Middlesbrough College, Zara has simple but powerful advice:
“Go for it!”
“Even if you’re unsure and just want to explore music more, you will get so much out of this course. You’ll gain industry-relevant experience, build confidence, and push yourself to think outside the box. It’s an amazing opportunity to discover yourself as a musician, which is so important in this industry!”
In the future, Zara has plans to release her own music under the name “ZARA” as a versatile soloist, combining fluid choreography and other aspects of performing arts in her on stage performances!
