Travel and Tourism Lecturer
“I always knew I wanted to work within the travel and aviation industry. I began my career working at National Holidays and then from 2003 I flew with Virgin Atlantic.
“I came to working at the College after I attended an open day to enrol as a beauty student, however I ended up speaking with the travel and aviation team about coming in as a guest speaker. Following this, I enrolled onto a Cert Ed course with a placement at the College.
“In 2015 I was teaching whilst studying my second year of the Cert Ed course. I left briefly for 18 months to fly more and came back to Middlesbrough College in January 2020. Since then, my role has changed from being an hourly paid teacher to being contracted with my own tutor groups.
“I have enjoyed being a tutor and getting to know my students really well. I like that I can bring up to date experience into the lessons as I am still active crew. I love the people I work with as we have such a supportive team.
“A major highlight for me was being able to work the flights that took my students to New York and back. Being able to spend time with them in New York as a crew member who knew the area as well as their teacher was amazing.”For anyone thinking about applying for a job at Middlesbrough College, I would say go for it as you can bring whatever job or experience you have into the classroom and make it relevant for the learners.”
“I have 2 boys so during my spare time if I am not at football with them we like to go walking. I generally fly on a weekend where I like to shop and socialise with other crew.”
