Craig Whitfield
Craig has progressed to study a degree in Sociology at University.
“I decided to come back into education when I was 43 after being made redundant. It was the opportunity I needed to pursue a career that I was passionate about.
“I knew that I wanted to go to University and that I wanted a job where I could help people. That’s when I decided to enrol onto the Access to Higher Education course in Humanities and Social Sciences at Middlesbrough College. When I was 17 I chose money over education as I wanted to earn straight away, so I was nervous about returning to education, however the team at Middlesbrough College set my mind at ease. I absolutely loved the experience! The course was fabulous and helped me to gain all the skills I needed to progress to University. I gained skills in presenting, academic writing and referencing that prepared me well for my degree.
“I wouldn’t be where I am now without the support and guidance from the team at Middlesbrough College. I would recommend this course without hesitation to anyone considering returning back to education. An Access course is perfect for mature students and will help to ease you back into learning. I made good friends on my course who all had similar life experiences to me and we all helped and supported each other throughout the course. The tutors and staff at the College are all fantastic too. They were some of the nicest people I have ever met, everyone from the tutors on my course to the staff in the canteen!
“I was delighted to receive the Student of the Year award for my Access course. It was a lovely way to round off an outstanding experience. I was also over the moon to gain a distinction grade! I don’t think I would have achieved such a high result without the belief of Middlesbrough College and can’t thank the team enough for all their support.
“After completing my degree I want to make a difference to people’s lives. I’m hoping to progress to a career in policy or charity work.”
