Middlesbrough College student Charlotte Kelsey has secured a place competing in the English Schools Athletics Championships! The competition is one of the biggest athletics competitions in the world with over 1,700 athletes competing from across the country.

Charlotte, who is a talented track runner, will be competing in the 200m event. She said: “It is very hard to be selected for this competition and a huge honour to be selected to represent the county.

“This year I qualified in 100m, 200m and 400m, but you are only allowed to compete in one event, so I have chosen the 200m track event. To qualify for this, you need to have a qualification standard, and this must be recorded at competitions that have electronic timing and wind gauges, without this your time would not count for selection. You also have to be selected by your county manager to represent your county- it is very competitive, so I’m delighted to be competing!

“This will be my third time at the competition. Next year I am planning to compete in the British University Games.

Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science Charlotte is also part of Middlesbrough AC Mandale and represents Cleveland County at national school events. She added: “I began running on my 8th birthday with my club Middlesbrough AC Mandale in the under 11s groups, I did my first competition three months after I started and have competed ever since. I hope that one day I will represent my country at international level in 400m, 200m and 400m relay.

“I decided to come and study sport at Middlesbrough College because of the College’s excellent reputation for delivering fantastic sport courses. I have really enjoyed studying and the College and would recommend it to anyone who wants to pursue a career in the industry. The support I received from my tutors was outstanding! They made the learning experiences less stressful, and I could always rely on them for guidance and support. I’m now progressing to University to study for a degree in Physiotherapy.”

Middlesbrough College is still accepting applications for their Sport programmes to study this September! It’s not too late to apply, find out more here.
