Becca Pethrick, a 28-year-old working mum of three from Middlesbrough decided she wanted to change her life and help to change the lives of others, by pursuing her career ambition of working in the healthcare sector.

Becca was inspired from her own experiences of having children to help other women start their families. After working as an Administration Assistant at Middlesbrough College for seven years, Becca took a leap of faith and enrolled onto the part-time Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health & Care. She worked full time whilst studying at Middlesbrough College and bringing up her three young children.

Becca said: “After having my own children I decided I wanted to work in the health sector and help other women through their pregnancies. I applied for the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health at Middlesbrough College. The course was so rewarding, it prepared me well for the next step and I was delighted to be offered places at University for nursing.

“The course is fantastic and I was offered a lot of support whilst studying here. The tutors and careers service were excellent and really helped me prepare for my University applications and interviews.

“My colleagues at the College were also really supportive of me and helped me to progress with my career. In a way I was devastated when I left Middlesbrough College as an employee as I loved working with my team, but I was also so excited about my future and what was to come.

“I’m in my first year at University and I’m loving it! My advice to any working mums who want to change their career is just to go for it! If you want it enough you can do it. Middlesbrough College were incredibly supportive of me so I would definitely recommend studying there.

“After I’ve completed my degree I’m hoping to continue studying and training for a career in Midwifery or I would like to work as a Neonatal Nurse. The possibilities are endless as to what I could do!”

If like Becca you want to make a career change, an Access to Higher Education Diploma could be the perfect choice. The Access Diploma is for students who don’t currently have a Level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 BTEC or A Levels.

This part-time qualification can be studied as a daytime or evening option and is designed to get students in to University. With small class sizes compared to Universities and all the individual support students need to ease back into education, this course will help students to succeed and reach their career goals. The Access Diploma is also FREE if students go on to complete a University level course.
