Alan Shepherd

Associate Director for Quality (DASS Faculty)

I have worked at Middlesbrough College for over 20 years, teaching from Level 2 to Level 6. I have been a Programme Leader in College Based Higher Education (CBE) and wrote and validated three Foundation Degree programmes and one Top-Up programme for the College. During my time teaching, I have taught Sport Anatomy, Sport Physiology, Biomechanics and supervised dissertation students.

I hold a BA in Education, a Masters in Sport and Exercise and I am also recognised as a Senior Fellow by Advanced HE. I am currently working towards my PhD.

I am the co-convener of the MC RIG, starting the group in 2021 with my former colleague, Dr Andrew Allen, and continuing the work with my current colleague, Lisa McKenna.

Health intervention, sport physiology, muscle hypertrophy, biomechanics.

Current research projects

I am currently working towards a PhD in health intervention. The PhD is looking to design innovative exercise programmes for a specific hard-to-reach population, namely taxi drivers.

After publishing an article on the effects of warm-ups on junior golfers, we are also working on future papers in the field, investigating perceptions and practices of junior golfers for warm-ups, cool-downs and strength and conditioning and also looking to extend the topic into other sports.
