Katy Grey began her career at Middlesbrough College in September 2024, joining MC6 as a Teacher of Geography. Before joining the College, she spent 12 years teaching Geography in schools and sixth forms across the Tees Valley.

When asked how she got into the subject, Katy said: “I’ve always been interested in Geography, ever since secondary school. I pursued it at the University of Birmingham and later completed a master’s degree at Durham University.

“I didn’t plan to go into teaching; however, I found the subject so interesting and felt that it was important for young people to learn about global issues like I did – my teachers were brilliant, and I wanted to have the same impact on future students.”

Katy applied for the part-time role at MC6 to focus on teaching A Levels, and Middlesbrough College offered her a flexible position that aligns with her personal life. She said: “The flexibility and ethos at the College fit perfectly with my family life – I have a great work/life balance while still doing what I love!

“Everyone has been so lovely, and I was made to feel welcome straight away. I genuinely look forward to coming to work. Plus, the students really want to be here which makes the job worthwhile.”

Katy’s passion for Geography extends beyond the classroom. In her spare time, she works as a freelance writer, creating educational content for other teachers and educational charities.

As well as her primary teaching role, she also serves as the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) Coordinator, supporting A Level students with self-directed projects.

Katy would encourage anyone to apply for a position at Middlesbrough College, stating: “My role at the College doesn’t feel like a job, but an enjoyable part of my life. It’s a brilliant place to work!”
