Leading the Health, Care and Business department, Jessica Barwell has a wealth of experience in the health and care sector and has progressed from a teacher through to an Assistant Principal.
“Before starting my career in further education, I had a short stint working with adults with learning disabilities when I finished my health and social care degree. After completing my PGCE, I started as an instructor, delivering to health and social care learners before moving on to a Programme Leader. I progressed into the adult education sector and then into a Curriculum Leader role which was my first step into management.
“I moved into Head of Curriculum, where I supported a large curriculum area, covering all provision types such as Access to HE, Adult learners, Higher Education students, apprenticeships and full-time study programmes. I’ve progressed right the way through education and I’m now an Assistant Principal at Middlesbrough College.
“My favourite thing about my role is inspiring leaders and seeing them develop and flourish. In turn, they then support students and develop their skills. In a nutshell, I enjoy seeing my colleagues progress and students achieving.
“Working for Middlesbrough College was an opportunity that came up. It was a big decision for me as I’m not from Middlesbrough so I was stepping out of my comfort zone. There are a lot of progression opportunities here to develop and a really support environment.
“If anyone is considering a role with the College, I would say absolutely go for it! There is a community at Middlesbrough College. The staff are welcoming, everyone is supportive and genuinely see value in your career.
“In my spare time, I like to spend time with my family and go out for meals. I have two children, a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old, so they take up a lot of my time outside of work.”
