During a session with my careers advisor at school, when discussing the various areas that would suit my interests, she opened the Middlesbrough College course guide on a random page and it landed on art and design; it was like fate really!

The course covers a wide range of aspects. It's great as in your second year you're able to focus on a specific area that interests you, and I've chosen fashion.

I didn't know anything prior to starting the course, but thanks to the support from the teachers, I've managed to pick up so many skills, and so much knowledge in a short space of time. The teachers have all spent time in industry too so it's great to find out about their experiences!

From garment construction and mixed media, to photography and graphics, each day I'm learning new things, and have the chance to be creative and do my own thing.

My parents are both very business minded and my Mum even has her own brand, so I'm keen to follow in her footsteps and set up my own business. I definitely think I've been prepped for the next step!

The experience hasn't been what I expected. I thought it'd be more like school but it's not; you're not restricted and I also really like that the town centre is so handy for popping to the shops to get equipment.

The support available within the College is also brilliant and I've learnt a lot through the Advantage Programme sessions that are regularly held each week.

I would definitely recommend Middlesbrough College; the Art and Design course is great if you're not sure what creative area you're wanting to pursue a career in.
