Photography (A Level) – Level 3

Year 1

• Exposure and Composition, DSLR cameras
• Portraiture and fashion
• Studio lighting
• Landscape
• Photoshop and image manipulation
• Contexts of photography

Year 2

• Personal Investigation (Component 1) – Students will select a theme to work from and create a body of work that takes them on their own independent and artistic journey.
• Externally Set Assignment (Component 2) – Students work to a title set by the exam board and after a preparatory study period sit a 15 hour controlled assessment.
  

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

Five GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including GCSE English language at grade 5.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

A Level Photography is entirely coursework.

Component 1 = 60% – A practical unit that must include a written element of min 1000 words.

Component 2 = 40% – Includes a 15 hour controlled assessment. Work is marked holistically to include both preparatory work and work controlled time.

Coursework is marked against 4 Assessment Criteria designed to recognise students’ ability to develop ideas, think creatively, record ideas imaginatively and show create a meaningful response.

University opportunities:
Past students have progressed to study degrees in art & design, marketing and photography.

Career opportunities:
Career opportunities include fashion photography, commercial photography, fine art photography, photo-journalism, live events and creative photo-illusion.

Students keep a sketchbook throughout – this may be a physical sketchbook, or they can use an online sketchbook in the form of a shared PowerPoint presentation.

Students have access to Middlesbrough College’s studios and darkroom, as well as access to the Adobe Suite to use Photoshop.

Students are welcome to use their own cameras if they have one, but they may also loan college cameras and lenses to use for their coursework.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on. Although not part of our full-time A Level study programme, students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
