Challenge Anneka is making a comeback to Channel 5 next year and a group of our Construction students were asked to give a helping hand with one of the projects, building a local community centre in Thornaby.
Course tutor Danny Bell first heard about the project through the work placement team at Middlesbrough College, he said: “The work placement team at the College informed me that Challenge Anneka would be back on our screens in the new year and that they were looking for volunteers to help out with a project in Thornaby.
“We were very excited to be involved as I knew it would be a fantastic opportunity for the students and would also give them some valuable work experience.
“They all loved working onsite and it gave them a good insight into the industry – they were also well looked after by the onsite catering team which was a bonus!”
Level 2 Construction student Josh Gregory said “It was a great experience being involved in this project! The part for me that I found the most beneficial was gaining real on-site experience as when I leave College, I would like to work in the Construction sector, so this will look great on my CV.”
Level 2 Construction student Adam Badger added, “We had a really fun few days helping out with this project and being filmed for the TV show! A lot of the team working on this project currently work in the industry, so I picked up a lot of helpful tips from them. I was able to watch someone do some cladding which was very interesting.”
Engineering Lecturer, Daniel Mazzey and some of his students were brought onboard halfway through the project to give a helping hand with some welding, “When I went to work on Friday morning, the last thing I imagined I would be doing was working on-site as part of a TV show! It sounded like such an exciting project to be part of, so I grabbed my tools and gathered together some students and we headed straight there.
“As this was also a community project, I felt honoured to be part of it! Being from the local area myself I’m always more than happy to be involved in anything will have a positive impact and give something back to the community.
Challenge Anneka reboot is due to return to our screens in the new year and will see challenges that will benefit those in local communities.
