Media Studies (A Level) – Level 3

Unit 1: Media Messages

• Section A: News and Online Media This section consists of two linked in-depth studies that focus on contemporary news in the UK, requiring learners to explore how and why newspapers and their online counterparts are evolving as media products and the relationship between both online and offline news. Learners must select from a list set by OCR.
• Section B: Media Language and Representation Learners will explore media language and representation, through media products set by OCR in the following media forms: magazines, advertising and marketing and music videos.

Unit 2: Evolving Media

• Section A: Media Industries and Audiences Learners will explore media industries and audiences, through media products set by OCR for: radio, video games, film*. *Film to be studied in relation to media industry only.
• Section B: Long Form Television Drama Learners will engage in one in-depth study of television as an evolving, global media form. Learners must study one complete episode of a contemporary English language long form TV drama and one complete episode of a non-English language long form TV drama to inform their study.

Unit 3: Creating Media

• Learners will create a cross-media product in response to an OCR set brief.

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

Five GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including GCSE English language at grade 5.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

A Level: Two written exams at the end of the two-year course (70%) and one Non-Examined Assessment unit (30%).</P.

University Study

Past students have progressed to degrees in media, English, psychology, journalism, film production, business management, marketing, education, law, politics, and history.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies. Laptops can be collected at enrolment. Click here for more information about MC Click.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

Although not part of our full-time A Level study programme, students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
