In Year 1, you will gain an introduction to the various types of crime, including the ‘dark figure of crime’, and the impact of unreported crime.
You will explore the media’s representation of crime as well as the impact of the growing number of crime dramas. You will also be able to answer ‘why do people commit crime?’ There are several theoretical perspectives, you will explore and evaluate each in their ability to explain all crime, from low – level to some of the worst offenders in recent history.
In Year 2, you will study the justice system, you will follow an offender through their arrest, questioning, trial and then sentence.
Throughout the year you will consider the effectiveness of the system, you will be able to ask does prison work? Are the police effective? What effects the system’s ability to function properly?
Throughout Year 2 you will consider several case studies in detail, exploring where the system has worked and where it hasn’t while developing the skills and knowledge needed to make a difference in this critical field, and valuable for further education.
