Criminology (A Level Equivalent) – Level 3

In Year 1, you will gain an introduction to the various types of crime, including the ‘dark figure of crime’, and the impact of unreported crime.

You will explore the media’s representation of crime as well as the impact of the growing number of crime dramas. You will also be able to answer ‘why do people commit crime?’ There are several theoretical perspectives, you will explore and evaluate each in their ability to explain all crime, from low – level to some of the worst offenders in recent history.

In Year 2, you will study the justice system, you will follow an offender through their arrest, questioning, trial and then sentence.

Throughout the year you will consider the effectiveness of the system, you will be able to ask does prison work? Are the police effective? What effects the system’s ability to function properly?

Throughout Year 2 you will consider several case studies in detail, exploring where the system has worked and where it hasn’t while developing the skills and knowledge needed to make a difference in this critical field, and valuable for further education.

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

You should have achieved at least five GCSES at Grade 4/5 or above, including English language and mathematics.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

The course is assessed by both controlled assessment (50%) and external examination (50%). With each year having an external exam and a controlled assessment. Each of these four assessments are equally weighted towards your final grade.

Your controlled assessment consists of an 8-hour open book exam with your class notes. This will be completed for units one and three. Your external exam is a 90-minute closed book exam for units two and four.

Previous students have progressed to study at HE level in subjects such as criminology, sociology, psychology, criminal justice, social and public sector development, policing, youth and community studies and law.

There are a wide range of roles available within the criminal justice system, such as the police, prison and probation service, youth work, support work in sectors such as women’s refuges, civil services, housing, community worker and social worker.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.
