Tumble outta’ bed and stumble to the MC Theatre for 9 to 5 The Musical
Students from Middlesbrough College’s Performing Arts department are ready to put on a show with Dolly Parton’s smash-hit musical!
9 to 5 The Musical tells the story of three women pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss. Concocting a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor, will the ladies manage to reform their office – or will events unravel when the CEO pays an unexpected visit?
Inspired by the iconic 80’s film and brought to you by Dolly Parton herself, this hilarious production is about teaming up, standing up, and taking care of business!
The iconic show stars Musical Theatre students Keeley Octon as Doralee Rhodes, Freya Thornton as Violet Newstead and Millie Dean as Judy Bernly, while Production Arts student Ethan Warren tackles the role of their egotistical boss, Franklin Hart Jr.
We spoke to the students about their experience on the show. Millie said: “I’ve loved being part of this production and getting to make friends on the course. It’s our last show so I’m really pleased we’ve all been able to perform together.”
Keeley added: “It’s been a great experience and we’ve been able to get a real taste of the industry.”
Ethan, who plays the show’s villain, said: “I’ve always wanted to play the bad guy. Getting cast as such a horrible character has been a great opportunity.”
Freya added: “I definitely think people should come and watch us! It’s a feel-good, classic show that’s all about female empowerment.”
We also spoke to Visual Performing Arts tutor, Nicola Scott-Hughes, about the show. She said: ‘It’s a huge production for a College and we’re really proud of the students. They’ve all worked really hard to put the show together and they’ve done everything themselves – even the costumes! They’ve been searching through charity shops to find clothes that fit their characters.”
9 to 5 The Musical is on at the Middlesbrough College Theatre from Monday 19th June to Thursday 22nd June.
