Super students who have impressed tutors, employers and the wider community alike were honoured at Middlesbrough College’s Student of the Year Awards 2024.

A total of 36 awards for teenage and adult learners were handed out at a ceremony at the College attended by students, friends and family as well as staff and employers.

Categories covered a wide range of studies across sectors including health and social care, construction, engineering and fashion, spanning age ranges from 16 to adult and with awards sponsored by a host of leading businesses and organisations across the Tees Valley, including Caspar Group, Sembcorp Energy UK, Unity Trust Bank and many more.

Taking home the top prizes for overall student of the year (16-18 years old) and overall student of the year (adult) were William Laird and Jessica Schneider respectively.

William, who was also named Construction Student of the Year, was commended for “consistently demonstrating unwavering commitment, resilience and an unyielding pursuit of excellence”.

The T Level Electrical student also recently won the regional inter-college electrical competition, which award judges said “left employers and judges alike in admiration of his skills”.

William, from Yarm, was also praised for making a difference to communities outside the classroom with his involvement in Botton Village Greenhouse and the Whitby Christmas Market.

Judges concluded: “From perfect attendance to impeccable standards of work in our workshops, he has set the bar high for his peers.”

Adult Student of the Year Jessica Schneider, who was also named Childcare Adult Learner of the Year, was praised for overcoming barriers as she juggles family and full-time work with her studies on a Level 4 Advanced Practitioner course in Early Years.

Judges said: “Jess’ attitude to learning is remarkable and even when she feels she cannot continue she is resilient and always finds a way to overcome any challenge that she faces with positivity and determination.

“Jess is an asset to the L4 Advanced Practitioner group and her knowledge, skills and behaviours shine through within class discussions and have supported her to develop in her role in an Early Settings.

“Jess has a bright future ahead of her in the Early Years sector and is the definition of ‘I can do it’.”
