This is an A Level Mix it up programme. You will study this course alongside A Levels.

This course concentrates on the development of knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in applied human biology and health science areas. You will cover topics such as biological molecules, the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system, detecting and managing disease and microbiology. The course has 2 units in year 1 and 2 units in the second year.

  • 180 GLH – Equivalent to 0.5 of an A level
  • Principles of Applied Human Biology– External Exam (Mandatory Unit)
  • Practical Microbiology and Infectious Disease – Internal Assessment (Mandatory Unit)
    Year 2
  • 180 GLH – Top up to reach the equivalent of an A level
  • Human biology and health issues – External Assessment (Mandatory Unit)
  • Functional Physiology– Internal Assessment (Mandatory Unit)

On completion of all four unit’s students will leave with the equivalent of 1 A Level – BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Human Biology.


Entry requirements

You should have achieved at least five 9-5 grades at GCSE (not equivalents), including English language and maths. An average GCSE point score of 5.5 recommended (only GCSE grades for this score, not equivalents).

There is an external examination in year one (1.5 hours), and an externally marked controlled assessment in year 2 and two internally assessed units, which are verified by the awarding body.

University opportunities: Past students have progressed to study degrees in biology, biological science, microbiology, radiography, paramedic sciences, forensic science, sport science and sports therapy with rehabilitation. Dependent on the other subjects it is studied alongside.
Career opportunities: These include fields allied to medicine, dietetics, laboratory technician, psychologist, research and development, management, environmental professions, conservation and sports science.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
