Biology (A Level) – Level 3

Modules offered may vary.

Modules include:
Year 1:

• Biological molecules, DNA and enzymes
• Cell structure and cell division
• Immune system
• Gas exchange in plants and animals
• Transport: heart and circulation
• Biodiversity and classification

Year 2:

• Photosynthesis and Respiration
• Homeostasis and hormones
• Receptors, nerves and muscles
• Inheritance and genetics
• Evolution and populations
• Ecosystems and energy flow
• Gene technology, medical diagnosis and gene expression

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

Five GCSEs at Grade 4/5 or above, including GCSE English language and mathematics at Grade 5. GCSE Science Grade 6 (combined science) or GCSE Biology Grade 6 (separate).

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

AS Level: 100% by examination. You will sit two 1.5-hour exams at the end of Year 1.

A Level: 100% by examination. You will sit three 2-hour exams at the end of Year 2.

There is no coursework, but you must complete twelve assessed practicals to achieve a Practical Endorsement Certificate. 15% of your exam marks tests practical knowledge. 10% of your exam marks tests Maths skills.

University opportunities:

Past students have progressed to study degrees in dentistry, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, environmental science, biology, medicine, radiography, sport & exercise science, physiotherapy and zoology.

Career opportunities:

Career opportunities include conservationist, dentist, doctor, marine biologist, nurse, paramedic, pharmacologist, research scientist, teacher and vet.

Students should bring stationery and a calculator. PPE (goggles and lab coats) will be provided.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies. Laptops can be collected at enrolment. Click here for more information about MC Click.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

After receiving your application form, you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on. Although not part of our full-time A Level study programme, students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
