Level 3 Computing student Kain has nearly completed his course at College after four years of hard work. Kain, who is visually impaired, hasn’t been alone during his journey at College as trusted companion and guide dog, Ursula, a golden Labrador retriever has been by his side and has helped to support him throughout his studies.
Kain said “Ursula is my best friend and has helped me and supported throughout my education. She has given me a lot of confidence and helped to improve my social skills. I am very grateful to her for all her assistance and support.
“My Computing course at Middlesbrough College has been outstanding. The tutors have been so understanding and are always there to offer support and advice.
“My specialist learning support assistant Stephen has also been by my side throughout my journey at Middlesbrough College and I trust him completely. He really has had such a positive impact on my experience at College and I don’t know what I would have done without him. The support he has given me is something I will always value.”
Faithful canine, Ursula, recently received a star award from Middlesbrough College in recognition of her hard work throughout the last four years. Ursula has worked in the College and supported Kain, she also cheers up fellow students and staff, meeting and greeting them every day and making everyone feel welcome. Ursula has been a massive part of the team and a buddy to everyone at College.
Middlesbrough College offers additional learning support to students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties and provides a wide range of support services to enable students to access the education and social environments of the College.
Stephen Pugh, Kain’s specialist learning support assistant said “Working within the ALS Team at Middlesbrough College is very rewarding. We are here to support students and help them to succeed at College.
“Ursula has been a big part of the team and has had such a positive impact on Kain’s education. I have seen Kain grow in confidence throughout his time at Middlesbrough College and Ursula has been a great companion for him.
“It is fantastic that Middlesbrough College offers such excellent learning support so students who are visually impaired can fulfil their career ambitions and bring their guide dogs to College to help them with their learning experience.”
