Level 3 Makeup Artistry student’s Yasmin Smith and Jai Ashford have gained an employment edge, thanks to Middlesbrough College and the work experience opportunities available.
As part of his Level 3 course, Jai gained a work experience placement at a local salon in his hometown, Staithes. After impressing the salon with his talents, Jai now works at the salon covering the makeup artist and helping out in busy periods. Jai is also a freelance makeup artist and gained a new client base from his work experience placement as customers were so pleased with their makeup.
Jai said “The opportunities on the course have been unreal. I have developed my skills and pushed myself to be more creative with my makeup looks. I have absolutely loved my time at Middlesbrough College and I have come away with professional skills and friends for life too!
“My work experience was amazing. The customers I worked with at the salon also come and get their makeup done by me and even the girls who work at the salon do too! My career goal is to work in the fashion industry and help to style editorial fashion. It’s my dream to one day work at London Fashion Week!”
As part of her work experience for the Level 3 programme, Yasmin worked on two short film sets helping to style the hair and makeup. The talented beauty student has worked on the set of Cheese, a short film directed and produced by Barker Visuals and worked on set with Jonny Vegas!
Yasmin said “The work experience opportunities have been incredible. I am lucky to have worked on two film sets and helped to create the vision for the films. Tim Barker, the director of Cheese, allowed me to come up with the hair and makeup concept for the film which was an amazing experience. It helped to push me and develop my ideas and I was really happy with the final piece- it all looked great on screen!
“It was also fantastic to work with Jonny Vegas! I was a runner on the set and helped to create zombie inspired looks for the film. I also styled all the actors who were playing the extras in the film which was a great experience.
“My Makeup Artistry course at Middlesbrough College has been fantastic. It has developed my creativity and pushed me to explore different concepts and ideas. I have loved working on photography shoots too and learning about how lighting can affect makeup looks on camera. My work experience during my course has made me want to pursue a career in film and television!”
After completing the Level 3 course, Yasmin is staying at Middlesbrough College to study Photography in order to gain the skills needed to progress further in the film and television industry. Jai is progressing to Leeds College University Centre to study a Foundation degree in Makeup Artistry.
