Level 3 Sport student Louise Atkinson has returned from her recent visit to Kenya with the National Citizenship Service where she taught English, maths and sport to children for 11 days.
The National Citizenship Service takes place in the local community and allows 15-17 year olds the chance to embark on exhilarating challenges and build skills for work and life.
Louise joined the NCS group prior to starting College. Before embarking on the 11 day trip to Africa, Louise had to fundraise £1,700 which she successfully achieved through bag packing, hosting race nights and gaining company sponsorships.
Louise said “I would recommend the experience to anybody! I’m going to go back next year, it was absolutely amazing.
“We did lots of different sports activities with the children including dance and football.
“My favourite part of the trip was experiencing the different culture and helping the students.”
Louise is a talented footballer and is a part of the Football Academy at Middlesbrough College. As an aspiring sports coach/teacher, Louise has valued the experience and has found it has helped her with her College studies.
Louise said “My College tutors have been really supportive and I have learnt a lot from my visit to Kenya.
“The experience was very helpful and rewarding and has confirmed my decision to go into sports coaching or teaching after I have finished my College course.”
Louise is hoping to be offered a sport scholarship to study in Texas, America next year and hopes to progress to sports coaching or teaching.
