AAT Level 4 – Professional Accounting Technician

You will build technical accounting expertise alongside professional, analytical and workplace skills.

Your learning will include:

• Financial accounting and reporting – applying accounting principles, preparing and interpreting financial information, and correcting errors.
• Management accounting and analysis – using costing, budgeting and financial data to support business performance and decision-making.
• Risk, controls and compliance – understanding financial controls, legislation, ethics, fraud prevention and risk management.
• Data, technology and cybersecurity – using accounting software and digital tools to manage and communicate financial information securely.
• Professional judgement and ethics – applying critical thinking, professional scepticism and ethical decision-making.
• Business awareness and sustainability – understanding the wider role of finance, including sustainability, equality, diversity and inclusion.
• Communication and stakeholder management – presenting financial information clearly and building effective working relationships.
• Professional development – managing workloads, adapting to change and taking responsibility for continuous improvement.

Alongside the apprenticeship, you will also have the opportunity to study the 2026 AAT Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians. This non-mandatory qualification covers Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Audit and Internal Controls, Principles of Taxation and Advanced Business Awareness, providing additional technical knowledge to complement your apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships begin when an apprentice starts their role in the workplace. Throughout the programme, they will gain hands-on experience while learning on the job. In addition, apprentices attend a dedicated study day each week through classroom-based learning at Middlesbrough College.

The apprenticeship is typically completed within 18-21 months. As the programme includes a range of on-programme learning, assessments and workplace development, sufficient time is provided to complete all aspects of the apprenticeship. Learners may complete individual elements at different stages depending on their progress, experience and workplace opportunities. The overall duration allows time to develop and demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and behaviours before completing the apprenticeship

Employment in a role relevant to your chosen apprenticeship is essential. Our Apprenticeships and Training team can support applicants in finding suitable employment where possible; however, we strongly encourage anyone interested in an apprenticeship to actively seek employment opportunities independently.

Applicants should have previous accounting knowledge, qualifications or relevant workplace experience. This could include completion of a Level 3 accounting qualification, such as the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, or relevant experience working in an accounting or finance role. Applicants will be considered on an individual basis, taking into account their existing qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience.

Applicants are normally required to hold English and Maths at Grade 4 or above. Evidence of these qualifications must be provided at enrolment. If you are unable to produce certificates or do not meet these entry requirements, you may be invited to complete an initial assessment as part of the application process.

All applicants will be required to attend an interview to discuss their suitability for the apprenticeship and their existing experience and knowledge.

Your progress will be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through a combination of apprenticeship assessments, workplace assessment and regular progress checks.

• Role Scenario Examination – you will complete a role-based scenario examination as part of the apprenticeship. This assesses how you apply your knowledge and skills to realistic accounting situations. Successful completion can also provide Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for the Business Awareness unit within the non-mandatory AAT qualification.
• Knowledge Test – you will complete a knowledge test to demonstrate your understanding of the technical knowledge required by the apprenticeship.
• Behaviours – your workplace behaviours will be assessed by your employer and signed off as you develop throughout the apprenticeship.
• On-programme progress checks – regular reviews and progress checks will help you track your development, identify any support needed and ensure you are making good progress towards completion.

Optional AAT Level 4 Diploma

The AAT Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians is a non-mandatory qualification. If you choose to complete the full qualification, you will also need to successfully complete the additional AAT assessments covering:

• Financial Accounting
• Management Accounting
• Audit and Internal Controls
• Principles of Taxation
• Advanced Business Awareness

You will need to pass the relevant assessments, including the Business Awareness assessment, to achieve the full AAT Level 4 Diploma.

You may also choose to specialise in areas such as management accounting, financial reporting, audit and assurance, taxation, financial analysis or internal controls.

Progression will depend on individual circumstances, including your experience, existing qualifications and the entry requirements or exemptions offered by the relevant professional body.

The costs of your apprenticeship training are covered through apprenticeship funding, subject to the relevant funding rules. Where applicable, this can be funded through your employer’s Apprenticeship Levy.

Your AAT registration, examination fees and required course books and materials are also included as part of the apprenticeship, so there are no additional course fees for you to pay.
