Meet Val Hogan, Skills Development Manager, who is celebrating 25 years working at Middlesbrough College Group!
“I’m celebrating something that feels bigger than an anniversary – it feels like a piece of my life story,” said Val. “A quarter of a century of memories, milestones and moments that have shaped who I am, both professionally and personally.”
Val’s journey with Middlesbrough College started in 2001, when she was working as a supervisor in a factory in Hartlepool.
“We had an assessor come in from Middlesbrough College to support our NVQ Food Production qualification, and I really hit it off with her. I was inspired by what she did by supporting people through their qualifications. She let me know there was a vacancy at Middlesbrough College, so I applied.”
Val soon joined the team and began building relationships with local employers, as she headed out to assess workforces.
“I really enjoy making a difference to people’s lives. There was one time I supported a young lady within a cleaning company; she struggled to read or write, so I put in the time to help her complete her assessment. She passed with flying colours and gained her first certificate!”
Val’s current role as a Skills Development Manager sees her supporting local businesses within the Service Industry Sector to identify their workforce needs. She supports companies with apprenticeships or training courses to grow their business.
“When I look back, it’s impossible to not feel emotional. This place has seen me grow, change, learn, stumble, succeed and become someone I’m genuinely proud to be.’
“It’s been more than a job; it’s been a constant in my life, a place that has challenged me and given me purpose.”
Val has seen Middlesbrough College evolve over the past 25 years, including working with different principals and managers, and seeing the Middlehaven campus grow.
“The real magic is the people. I’ve worked alongside colleagues who have become friends, and friends who have become family. We’ve shared laughter, pressure, triumphs, and the everyday moments that quietly stitch themselves into something meaningful. The friendships I’ve made here are some of the greatest gifts of my career, and I’ll carry them with me always.”
When asked what she would say to someone considering a role with Middlesbrough College, Val said, “Even if it feels out of your comfort-zone, you should just go for it! I have done so many things I didn’t know I was capable of whilst I’ve worked here. Every day is different, and every day I laugh.’
“I’ve loved every minute; the busy days, the breakthroughs, the small wins, the big changes and everything in between. Every chapter of my journey has mattered.’
“Here’s to 25 years of memories that mean more than words can say and to whatever comes next. I’m grateful, I’m proud, and I’m excited for the future, wherever it leads.”
