Meet Laura Jayne Bunker, a Level 3 Art and Design student who is already starting to picture her future in photography!
After changing colleges last year and joining Middlesbrough College, she found the perfect course for her – one that not only became a real creative outlet but also helped her bring her creative ambitions into focus.
Laura Jayne said, “I originally studied business at a different college because I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after school. After about a year, I knew that it just wasn’t for me.
“That’s when I spoke to the careers team at Middlesbrough College, and they told me about the Art and Design course. As soon as I heard about it, it just felt right, and I knew it was something I was actually interested in and excited to do.
“What stood out to me was that you get to try different types of art within one course, like fine art, photography and textiles. That was perfect because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to focus on yet, so it gave me the chance to explore”
Laura Jayne also spoke about how the course has opened her eyes to new interests and career ideas:
“It’s made me a lot more interested in photography. When I first started, I thought I wanted to be a tattoo artist, but I wasn’t fully sure. After spending time in the studio, I realised how much I enjoyed photography. It introduced me to new skills and ideas for the future.
“I love everything about it, the equipment, the studios and even working in the dark room. The college has also let me take equipment home, which has really helped me improve. I even got to take photos at my mam’s wedding, which meant a lot to me.”
Laura Jayne also spoke highly of her tutor, Sarah:
“Sarah really stands out to me because she’s always honest about your work, which is so important in art because it helps you improve. She’s also really supportive. If I’m stuck on an idea, she’ll help me figure out what I can do next and guide me through it.”
When asked if she would recommend studying at the college, Laura Jayne said:
“I’d recommend Middlesbrough College, especially the art course. It gives you the freedom to try different things, which is great if you don’t want to be stuck doing just one thing.
“It is quite fast paced but that’s good if you enjoy a challenge. It’s also such a good creative outlet. The atmosphere in the art department is really friendly. Everyone talks, shares ideas, and helps each other. It feels like a little community, and I’ve made some close friends here because we all have similar interests.”
