Coby Gittins

Meet Coby, Schools Liaison Marketing and Promotions Assistant!

Coby knows from his own time at school how important it is for young people to see what’s possible. Now, as part of the Schools Team at Middlesbrough College, Coby supports young people with their next steps, helping them make confident choices about their future!

Coby said: “As someone who has grown up in Middlesbrough, I want to make people aware of the incredible opportunities available to them.

“There are a lot of young people who aren’t aware of their potential, and a big part of my role is helping those people feel invested in their future.

“I love having those important conversations – asking students what they enjoy, what subjects they like, or if they have any goals or dreams. There’s nothing better than helping a student find the right course for them.”

Coby first joined Middlesbrough College in 2021 as an Admissions Assistant. However, when an opportunity to join the Schools Liaison Team arose, he knew it was the right step.

“It was a chance to get out, speak to people and directly help young people make the best choices for them. Knowing what I wanted to do wasn’t easy for me when I was in school – so I know how helpful it can be to talk through your options with someone.”

Now, five years into his career at Middlesbrough College, Coby is enjoying every day.

“I love it here. Everyone is so friendly, and no two days are the same. It’s a great place to work.

“One day I might be driving from school-to-school to deliver presentations, the next attending large careers fairs where there are hundreds of young people, or visiting schools across the North East for lunch time drop-in sessions. There is always something going on and always young people to help.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my role is supporting Year 10 and 11 students from disadvantaged backgrounds. There are some kids that aren’t aware of the opportunities available to them or feel like they’re not good at anything. I love having those important conversations and eventually being able to help them enrol on a course that is brilliant for them.

“Sometimes students come up to me at Middlesbrough College and say, ‘You came to my school last year – I remember you!’. It’s really rewarding when students remember me and that I helped them.

Looking forward, Coby is keen to keep developing his skills and supporting even more young people make the best choices for their future.

“I’ve completed my Level 4 in Information, Advice and Guidance and I want to keep progressing. The college is always expanding, and I want to keep up with that. It’s also really important to me to help reduce the number of young people not in education, employment or training.

“I want to use everything I’ve learnt to help prospective students make the best choice for them – whether that’s a vocational course, A Levels, T Levels, or an apprenticeship!”

Outside of work, Coby is a big Middlesbrough FC fan and can usually be found watching football or listening to music when he’s not out in schools supporting students!
