The Access to HE Diploma in science is an exciting route to higher education and a new career in a range of science disciplines. The Diploma is composed of a number of units with a level and credit value.

You will cover maths and English to support your studies and then graded units in biology, chemistry and physics. There is also a focus on developing laboratory practical skills and analysis which is integral to any HE science course.

The course begins in September

14 hours per week.

The course usually runs across three days between the hours of 9am and 5pm. Timetables will be confirmed before the course starts.

Entry requirements

GCSE English and maths at grade C (4) would be advisable, but the minimum requirement is a Level 2 qualification in both English and maths. A GCSE in science is recommended but not essential.

Assessment is designed to prepare learners for the full range of assessment methods they will experience at university including practical lab work, presentations, written assignments, posters and online elements.


This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Past students have progressed onto a range of degree programmes at Middlesbrough College including the BEng (Hons) Engineering, Fd/BSc (Hons) Computing and the Fd/BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy with Rehabilitation.

Our past students have also progressed to psychology, biomedical sciences, marine biology, chemistry, diagnostic radiography, dentistry, dietetics and forensic science.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.


Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course. 

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances. 

Level 3 Entitlement: If you are aged 19 - 23 on the start date of the course and this is your first full Level 3 qualification the course is free. Advanced Learner Loan: If you are aged 19-23 and this is not your first full Level 3 qualification or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees. However, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of the fee. The Advanced Learner Loan will not be repayable by students who progress into Higher Education and complete their degree.
