
Our Inclusive Learning department supports students with a wide range of additional and special educational needs, including learning difficulties. These courses are designed to help you prepare for adult life by developing your independence, improving your employability, and encouraging active participation in your community.
You’ll also be supported by our Additional Learning Support Team throughout your studies. They offer daily drop-in sessions for anyone who needs a bit of extra help. You’ll have the chance to build your skills and confidence through community projects and take part in enrichment activities that help you grow both personally and socially.
Our Course Pathways Explained
Our Preparation to Adulthood courses are for young people aged 16–18, or 19–24 if you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). It’s designed for learners working at Entry Level 1 to Entry Level 3, especially those with learning difficulties or disabilities.
You’ll work towards a qualification in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development (up to Level 2). The course helps you get ready for adult life by building your confidence, independence, and skills for work.
You’ll learn how to live more independently, stay healthy, make friends, and be part of your community. You’ll also get real work experience to help you understand what it’s like to have a job.
There are fun and creative activities too, and everything you learn will help you in everyday life and your future.

Our Supported Internship is a one-year course that helps you explore job options in a supportive, hands-on environment. You’ll spend time working in a real workplace, gaining valuable experience and learning what it’s like to have a job.
Alongside your work placement, you’ll follow a personalised study programme. This is designed to help you build the skills you need to reach your future goals and prepare for adult life.
Middlesbrough College Futures
Our internal programme sees student working in the college across many curricular and business support sectors. This includes catering, estates, student services, sports and enrichment, and many more area.

Our Vocational Steps course helps you build confidence and skills for work or further training. You’ll explore different industries like creative arts, catering, health and social care, motor vehicle, and construction.
You’ll get up to 6 hours each week in your chosen vocational area, working on practical projects and gaining real-world experience. You can also try different pathways during the year to see what suits you best.
The course includes an Entry Level 2 AIM qualification in Employability Skills. You’ll learn job-related skills and take part in enrichment activities to support your personal development.
There are no entry requirements. You’ll be in a class with others who have similar interests and needs, and our Inclusive Learning team will help you find the right path and support you throughout the course.

Within the Inclusive Learning department, we deliver an ESOL course designed for young people aged 16–18 whose first language is not English.
Before you join the college
We understand it can be a challenge for some students to progress from school or another college to somewhere new. During the application process, our Additional Learning Support team regularly visit schools to discuss the various support available to students and are available at our open events to speak to.
We can arrange a 1:1 tour of the college before you join us so you can get a feel of the college and the environment you will be studying in. We can arrange a virtual taster session so that you can find out more about your chosen course, meet your tutors and adjust to college life.
During the application process, the team may ask for the following:
- SEN Support Plan
- Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- Education Psychological Assessment etc.
This information will help us to identify whether we can make reasonable adjustments and provide the appropriate support or exam concessions.
During the enrolment process, our team can provide specialist support if needed to ensure you have adequate support in your studies in preparation for your first day.
