Chemistry (A Level) – Level 3

• Acid–base, pH, and buffers
• Bonding, structure, shapes of molecules and intermolecular forces
• The periodic table, periodicity, group 2 and the halogens
• Enthalpy, entropy and free energy
• Reaction rates and equilibrium
• Redox and electrode potentials
• Transition elements
• Basic concepts of organic chemistry
• Polymers and isomers
• Organic synthesis
• Organic mechanisms
• Analytical techniques (IR, MS, chromatography and spectroscopy (NMR)
• Development of practical skills in chemistry

Emphasis throughout the course is on developing knowledge, competence and confidence in practical skills and problem solving. You will learn how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.

This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

5 GCSEs at Grade 4/5 or above, including GCSE English language and mathematics at Grade 5. GCSE Science Grade 6 (Combined) or GCSE Chemistry Grade 6 (Separate).?

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

AS: 100% by examination. You will sit two exams at the end of Year 1.

A Level: 100% by examination. You will sit three exams at the end of Year 2.

There is no coursework, but you must complete twelve assessed practicals to achieve a Practical Endorsement Certificate.

To achieve a Practical Endorsement you will be expected, through a range of experiments, to display your competency in:

• Following procedures.
• Applying an investigative approach when using instruments and equipment.
• Working safely.
• Making and recording observations.
• Researching, referencing and reporting.

University opportunities:

A Level Chemistry forms part of an excellent basis for a university degree in healthcare such as medicine, pharmacy and dentistry as well as the biological sciences, physics, mathematics, pharmacology and analytical chemistry.

Career opportunities:

Career opportunities include chemical, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries
and in areas such as forensics, environmental protection and healthcare.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies. Laptops can be collected at enrolment. Click here for more information about MC Click.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.
