This course allows you to explore a range of natural landscapes including glaciers drylands and coasts. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of geographical debates such as the hazardous earth, exploring oceans, the future of food, disease and dilemmas and climate change. You will complete an individual investigation developing skills in planning, collecting and analysing information and have the opportunity to experience regional and international fieldwork projects.

You will complete an individual investigation developing skills in planning, collecting and analysing information and have the opportunity to experience regional and international fieldwork projects.

Past students have visited the Lake District and Iceland as part of their studies.

September - June

Entry requirements

You should have achieved at least five 9-5 grades at GCSE (not equivalents), including English language and maths. An average GCSE point score of 5.5 recommended (only GCSE grades for this score, not equivalents).

There are 3 examined units in June of Year 2:

  • Physical Systems: a question paper with 2 sections: Landscape Systems and Earth’s Life Support Systems, worth 22%
  • Human Interactions: a question paper with 2 sections: Changing Spaces; Making Places and Global Connections, worth 22%
  • Geographical Debates: Three sections to the exam where students answer questions on two topics, worth 36%

There is a non-examined independent investigation which may relate to any aspect of the specification. It is a written report worth 20% of your final grade and is marked by me, your teacher. You will complete your investigation in the summer term of Year 1 after developing investigation skills, training and practise through the first year topics.

University Opportunities: Past students have progressed to study degrees in earth sciences, geography, geology, quantity surveying, estate design and development, engineering, marketing, social and public sector development, architecture, education and environmental science.
Career Opportunities: Career opportunities include cartography, surveying, design, architecture, marketing, geographical information systems operations, planning and development, town planning and education.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
