ESOL courses for Adult Learners

Pre-Entry ESOL Course

This course is for people living in the UK who are beginners in English. The course prepares you for everyday life, further education and employment. It will develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

You must be unemployed and aged 16 years or older to apply for this course.

What you will learn:

  • English skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • Confidence: feel more comfortable using English in daily life
  • Independence: rely less on interpreters or translators
  • Community: take part in life in Britain and your local area

What happens after the course?

You can continue studying at Middlesbrough College. You may join courses in:

  • Employability
  • Community Interpreting
  • Vocational training
  • Higher education

ESOL courses for Adult Learners (aged 19 years and above)

At our Adult and Community Learning Centre at 2 Queens Square, we offer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses at different levels, depending on your experience with the English language.

These courses are designed for those who have basic English and those who wish to progress to other further education courses or into employment. You will be taught using different teaching methods in a classroom situation, and have access to computers.

What you will learn:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

These are part-time courses that run for 10 weeks each term. We have different start dates for the course; contact our Adult and Community Learning Team for more information.
