Overview

Law and criminology are popular subjects and the course would be an introduction to both disciplines. This course is for anyone thinking of applying to University to study either discipline or a joint degree.

The units introduce students to the English Legal system covering key areas of civil law, criminal law and the discipline of criminology. The ungraded units will prepare students for extended writing skills required for undergraduate study.

The course is made up of 45 graded credits and 15 ungraded credits.

Graded units are 9 credits each and level 3:
• The Courts and Justice
• Criminal Law
• Introduction to Tort of Negligence
• Crime in context
• Law and/or Criminology Project

Ungraded:
• English and Academic Skills for Higher Education, 9 credits at level 2
• Academic Skills for Access to HE, 6 credits at level 3

Entry requirements

GCSE English and maths at 4 or above or level 2 functional skills or equivalent.

Students will complete a range of internally set assignments. They include essays, presentations and scenario based questions related to criminal cases. Students gain pass, merit and distinction grades in each assignment and receive an overall grade for each unit.

This course is suited to students who wish to study a Law, Criminology or joint degree. This could then lead to a career in both legal professions and the criminal justice agencies after undergraduate study.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Level 3 Entitlement: If you are aged 19 - 23 on the start date of the course and this is your first full Level 3 qualification the course is free. For more information please contact Course Information on 01642 333333. Advanced Learner Loan: If you are aged 19-23 and
this is not your first full Level 3 qualification or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees. However, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of the fee. For information on Advanced Learning Loans go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans/.

The Advanced Learner Loan will not be repayable by students who progress into Higher Education and complete their degree.
