Art and Design Pathways Explained

Illustration and Fine Art

Illustration and fine art are both creative paths, but they focus on different things.

Illustration is about creating images that tell a story or explain an idea, like drawings in books, comics, posters, or even video games. It often has a clear purpose and is used in things like advertising, publishing, and animation.

Fine art, on the other hand, is more about expressing personal ideas, emotions, or exploring big themes through painting, drawing, sculpture, or mixed media. It’s often shown in galleries and museums. If you enjoy drawing, painting, or creating visual stories, both paths can be exciting.

Lila Richardson,  Art & Design – Level 1

Lila had entered the MIMA & Teesside University ‘Great Create’ competition, and her work had been selected to be in the exhibition at MIMA. She received a Highly Commended Award for her artwork. Lila had created a piece of work based on the Japanese manga and television series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which she had become a fan of during lockdown.

She said: “My tutor brought the competition to my attention, and I decided to apply for it. I put in so much hard work and spent a lot of time on the piece, so I was very happy to have received the award.

“I really enjoyed the course; Middlesbrough College stood out to me when I was looking at colleges in the area, as the art course involved all of my favourite aspects, such as drawing and realism.

“I settled into college well and made some really good friends. The staff were so friendly, and I felt well supported by them. I loved the range of projects I was given, especially when I got the chance to draw people, as that was what I was passionate about.”
