Business owners across the Tees Valley are benefitting from the innovative motor vehicle training offered at Middlesbrough College.

The College offers a range of motor vehicle training designed to futureproof local workforces, including courses in electric and hybrid vehicle Maintenance and repair.

The courses are designed for employers to help develop their employees’ technical skills and to help meet the needs of their business, this is especially important as the electric and hybrid vehicle industry grows with the Governments plans to stop the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

One business owner who has profited from studying the Level 4 Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components course at Middlesbrough College is Steve Nichol. Steve owns Hartlepool based Motor Vehicle Services and has seen a boost in business thanks to his recent qualification.

Steve said “Business is booming! We are one of the few garages in the Hartlepool area offering hybrid and electric vehicle servicing and we have seen an influx in trade since studying for the qualification at Middlesbrough College.

“The courses are excellent! You study two nights per week at the College, which has also been helpful as it has allowed me to study around the business and my other commitments.

“The tutors are also brilliant; they feel more like friends than teachers! They are down to earth and are happy to answer any questions or worries you have. The tutors have also come from industry, so they have hands-on experience in the sector which is valuable.

“I would recommend the course to other small business owners. I’m seeing a huge increase in hybrid and electric vehicles on the road and there is a lack of services to support them. Electric and hybrid is the way the world is going in the motor vehicle industry so it’s important to stay up to date on the latest technology and ensure our business is prepared for the future.”

Steve also put his employee, Jacob Crowe through the Level 4 course at Middlesbrough College. Jacob is a former apprentice who studied through the College’s apprenticeship and training arm, Northern Skills, he said: “I studied for my Level 2 Motor Vehicle apprenticeship with Northern Skills and loved it. I was well-supported throughout my apprenticeship by Northern Skills and the hands-on experience I received confirmed to me that I was pursuing a career in an industry I was passionate about. I was delighted when I received a permanent job role with Motor Vehicle Services and I’m really enjoying working at the business.

“I’d love to run my own garage one day, and thanks to the training I’ve received through the Middlesbrough College Group I know I’m heading in the right direction to achieve my ambitions.

“I’ve had a great experience with the Middlesbrough College Group and the tutors are fantastic. The training I have received recently has been hands-on and I’m now confident carrying out services for electric and hybrid vehicles in my role with Motor Vehicle Services.”

Middlesbrough College works with more than 2,000 employers across the group which includes Northern Skills and TTE to support and futureproof businesses.
