Adam Brown

Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, Programme Lead for the SCDF BSc, and Evidence Advocate

I am a lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science and Programme Lead for the SCDF BSc. I hold a BA in Sport and Exercise Science from Durham University, a PGCE in Physical Education with QTS from Loughborough University, and an MSc in Education from Loughborough University. My academic and professional development has been supported by experienced subject specialists across sport, education, and pedagogy.

I entered the teaching profession at the age of 22 and have experience across primary, secondary, higher education, and predominantly further education settings. Presently, I work across both FE and HE, with subject specialisms in research methods and biomechanics. My work is underpinned by a strong interest in evidence informed practice and effective pedagogy.

Alongside my teaching role, I contribute to MCRIG, a developing college-based research initiative that supports staff and student research activity, and I have recently been appointed as an Evidence Advocate, supporting the promotion and use of research informed approaches to enhance teaching and learning.

Areas of specialism

MSc in Education with a strong emphasis on meaningful education and the application of pedagogy to enhance learning experiences. The programme focused on understanding how educational practice can be designed to be purposeful, engaging and impactful across different learning contexts. Metacognition was explored as an integrated element within this broader pedagogical focus, particularly in relation to how learners develop awareness of their thinking and improve their ability to regulate and direct their own learning. The study provided a balanced and research informed understanding of how effective teaching practices can support deeper and more sustained learning outcomes.

A developing area of interest of mine is the use of digital tools to capture and evidence learner understanding, with a particular focus on enhancing questioning strategies within educational practice. This includes exploring how technology can be used to make student thinking more visible, enabling more responsive and targeted teaching. Digital platforms are of particular value in supporting formative assessment approaches, where structured questioning, feedback mechanisms, and interactive activities allow learners to articulate their reasoning and deepen their understanding. This interest aligns with a broader commitment to strengthening pedagogical practice through the effective integration of technology to improve engagement and promote higher order thinking.
