We caught up with Milly Marr, an A Level student with a passion for the environment and making a difference!
Milly knew MC6 was the place for her the moment she spotted Environmental Science on the course list. Fast forward to now, she’s studying English Language, Environmental Science, and Art – a unique combination of A Level subjects that blends her creativity with her passion for making a difference.
Milly said: “MC6 was the only Sixth Form I could find that offered Environmental Science, which is why I chose to study here. It also felt like the most modern Sixth Form I visited. Others seemed very old school in comparison!
“I chose my subjects based on what I enjoyed at GCSE level. However, Environmental Science was a completely new subject to me – I hadn’t seen anything like it before. I’m involved in a lot of environmental projects and volunteer outside of my studies, so it just made perfect sense.
“I really love studying here. The tutors are incredibly nice – they’re your friends as well as your teachers. They genuinely enjoy their subjects, which I think is really important. Because they’re so passionate about what they teach, they teach it well and the lessons are engaging. You can tell they really want you to succeed.
“I’ve made lots of friends and the people are so lovely. It’s nice to be around people who have similar interests to you.”
Beyond the classroom, Milly has embraced the full MC6 experience, taking part in a range trips, enrichment activities, and career-building opportunities arranged by the Sixth Form to support student’s learning.
“So far, I’ve been on a trip to Castle Head with my Environmental Science class to carry out field world, which was really cool. I also went on an Art trip to Leeds, where we explored different art galleries and museums.
“Throughout the year, we also visit various universities, which is really helpful when thinking about what I want to do next.”
As part of her studies, Milly has also taken part in the Career Ready Internship programme, starting with employability skills sessions led by Tina, MC6’s very own Industry Placement Co-ordinator.
“The employability skills sessions led to my internship, which is deigned to prepare you for your future career through workshops, seminars, and hands-on experience, helping you apply everything you’ve learned in a real-world setting.
“I’ve chosen Groundworks for my work placement, an organisation focused on water testing and connecting people with local rivers. I’m really excited about it!”
Outside of her studies, Milly also writes for Esk Valley News Quarterly, a community engagement magazine based in Whitby.
“I write articles, conduct research, and help with publishing and copywriting. One of the articles I published spoke about the Young Rangers, a group of young people who help people on the moors.
“I also work with the #Iwill movement, a charity which helps the government make the new national youth strategy. I am a youth collaborator on the board and help advise them by collecting evidence and advising on what young people want.
When asked about what she wants to do after MC6 and if she’d recommend it to others, Milly said:
“I want to go to University, and I think one day I’d like to work in emergency aid. I’m thinking about studying subjects like Anthropology or International Development.
“I’d recommend anyone to study at MC6. There’s a really nice atmosphere here, everyone really cares about what they’re learning, and you’re surrounded by people who care about their studies and want to do well. It’s uplifting and a good way to be. The teachers are lovely, too!”
