Meet Laura, second-year T Level Health student and 2025 Health and Social Care Student of the Year!

Reflecting on her time at Middlesbrough College, Laura said:

“The T Level Health course has provided me with the skills and knowledge I need for my future progression pathway.

“The support I have received from my teachers and support staff has been exceptional. By participating in amazing opportunities and learning from teachers across various fields of healthcare, I’ve grown even more passionate about making a difference to patients’ lives.

“Alongside this, the dedication and hard work the staff show has encouraged me to be resilient and positive throughout, even when challenges have arisen.

“The healthcare facilities at Middlesbrough College are fantastic. The large, well-established, simulated ward area has allowed me to enhance my soft skills like communication.

“I’ve also had the chance to practice more clinical tasks such as venipuncture and suturing, which has further supported my understanding and provided me with insight into areas I will be taught as I progress further.

As part of the T Level Health programme, students take up a work placement to put their learning into practice. Laura secured a volunteering role at James Cook University Hospital, where she completed 315 hours of industry placement. She said:

“Through my volunteering role at James Cook University Hospital, I have been fortunate enough to explore various wards, where I have been able to apply the skills and knowledge I have learnt over the course of this programme.

“The placement has allowed me the chance to give back to the NHS, who over the course of my life have gone above and beyond, as well as offering patients a person who can hopefully brighten up their day, no matter how small.

“After studying at Middlesbrough College for two years and building some strong connections with my teachers and support staff, I’m really going to miss it here!”

We are incredibly proud of Laura and can’t wait to see what she achieves next!

Laura’s teacher, Alfie Scott, who nominated her for the Health and Social Care Student of the Year award (sponsored by SNE Care Services), said:

“Laura consistently achieves high grades and is an active, positive presence within the department. She is always the first to volunteer, whether that’s supporting college events, helping to run the Health and Social Care Academy, or welcoming employers and guests to campus. Her passion for nursing is evident in all she does, and she continually seeks out opportunities to make a difference.

“In addition to completing the full 315 hours of industry placement at James Cook University Hospital, Laura has played a key role in raising over £3,000 for the James Cook Hospital Charity. She regularly goes above and beyond to support both staff and students – volunteering her time to teach core skills to her peers, assisting with open evenings, and speaking with external visitors, including representatives from the Department for Education, employers, and media.

Laura is a valued and inspiring member of the Health team. Her dedication, work ethic, and compassionate nature make her a truly deserving candidate for the Health and Social Care Student of the Year award!
