Fd Outdoor Adventure Education & Leadership student Abigail Jones said: “If you are aspiring to work in the outdoors sector, then this a brilliant course. I have already gained a wide range of knowledge and skills so far and continue to learn more each day.

“The teaching and support I have received so far has been incredible. I have enjoyed learning new things on my course, particularly the practical and activity days. This has included kayaking, hiking, navigation, Forest School and bushcraft.”

Another Fd Outdoor Adventure student, Mike McGregor, has found employment in the sector already before completion of his course. Mike said said: “Studying at Middlesbrough College has been a life changing experience as it has helped me to gain employment as a Vocational Coach teaching Outdoor Adventure and Education.

“The course has definitely helped me to gain new skills. The course has challenged me and allowed me to develop my self-esteem and confidence, and I really enjoy the academic side of the course too as it is helped me to gain new knowledge about my practice.”

Programme leader for the Outdoor Adventure Education & Leadership degree programmes Morgan Lax said: “We know there’s more to any academic course than purely theory, and for that we have created this programme that provides adventurous experiences which students then explore through a theoretical lens.

“We have also included relevant National Governing Body qualifications into the practical elements of the programme, so that students can easily step into employment.”

Students on the programme can expect to have the opportunity to study professional qualifications, such as: Mountain Training Association’s Lowland Leader, British Canoeing’s Foundation Safety & Rescue Training and Paddlesport Instructor Award, Inline Raft Guide and Outdoor First Aid, all of which are built into the degree programme delivery.

Paul Stone, the Director of Higher Education at Middlesbrough College said: “A degree course at Middlesbrough College is about more than just achieving a good academic qualification, it’s also about giving our students a springboard into their future career. Gaining accreditation for our BA (Hons) Outdoor Adventure Education and Leadership programme from the Institute for Outdoor Learning reinforces that commitment and ensures that our graduates are equipped to move forward as outdoor learning professionals.”
