Thinking about a construction course at Middlesbrough College, but not too sure on the career possibilities?
The construction industry will need over 200,000 new workers by 2025 to meet national demand, with over 9,000 workers needed in the north-east by 2026, so if there was ever a time to think about a career in construction, it’s now!
There are lots of new and exciting projects emerging across the region with opportunities in a variety of construction roles, so we’ve prepared a list of some of the jobs you could do within the construction industry.
Civil Engineer
Being a Civil Engineer involves overseeing a variety of different projects from design to construction, so you could be working in the office one day and on site the next. You will be involved in creating and improving the environment we live in and will need to think both logically and creatively in order to solve any problems that may occur.
Architect
If you’ve got an eye for detail and consider yourself a talented artist, architecture could be the job for you. Whether it’s designing a whole new building or restoring an old one, no one project will be the same. As an Architect you will be responsible for overseeing the project from start to finish, working with contractors and clients, and completing planning applications to ensure your projects can go ahead.
Bricklayer
If you think you’re more suited to practical hands-on work, you could consider a career in bricklaying. As a bricklayer you would be involved in one of the most essential parts of the construction process and get the reward of seeing your hard work come together before your very eyes. You will need physical strength to meet the demands of the job and be prepared to work on-site in a variety of weather conditions.
Quantity Surveyor
As a quantity surveyor, you will be responsible for drawing up contracts, carrying out risk assessments and drafting cost projections. If you are logical, analytical, and comfortable working with numbers, this could be the job for you. The job is mainly office based but will require regular site visits and interaction with clients and contractors, so if you are a strong communicator you may excel in this role.
Electrician
As an electrician you will be responsible for installing and repairing electrical machinery and equipment or servicing electrical systems to ensure they are working properly and are safe. This job is very hands on, so you will always be out and about, whether that be on a construction site or in a client’s home.
