Are you a school leaver interested in a career within the childcare industry?

Here at Middlesbrough College, our childcare courses will equip you with the skills, knowledge and experience to succeed in this rewarding and ever-growing industry.

Previous students have progressed into careers in youth work, education, management and childminding.

We’ve collated five things you will learn when studying a childcare course at Middlesbrough College…

How to create an enabling environment for children to develop

You will gain the knowledge and skills needed to create enabling environments for children to thrive. This includes setting up imaginative environments to promote children’s learning and development.

Areas of learning are explored in our interactive college classrooms and during your work placement.

Knowledge surrounding child development and the ‘unique child’

You will acquire a knowledge of how children learn and develop in all areas, gaining an understanding of the importance of play in children’s development.

You will take part in sessions to teach you about the different additional needs children may have, how all children learn in different ways and the ways to support.

How to be professional in the work place

Our childcare students undertake placement days each week in an early years setting.

You will become a part of the nursery team that you attend and work alongside professionals. Here you will observe and develop your own professional skills required for working in the Childcare sector.

Placement assessors and tutors will support you and you will be observed in placement to achieve work based abilities.

The process of safeguarding

You will develop vital knowledge and an understanding of safeguarding requirements in the early years.

Through theory and practical experiences in college and on placement, you will learn, observe and be a part of safeguarding procedures in order to be able to keep children safe and in a secure setting.

How to plan

Throughout the duration of your childcare course, you will plan activities across different age ranges and abilities.

You will gain knowledge of how to complete paperwork linked to planning, and become familiar with the important documents that support practitioners when planning.

Play-based learning activities are explored, and you will have the opportunity to create different resources, taking part in activities that will support you whilst on placement.
