This is a 2 year course studied September – June.

Five GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including GCSE English language and mathematics at grade 5.

As well as the entry requirements above you will also need to meet the specific requirements for the A Level courses you choose.

AS Level:

Two exams in May of the first year. Geological Enquiries, (an investigation of the geology of an area shown on an accompanying simplified geological map, with hand specimens to examine and identify) and Foundation Geology, (questions which require learners to respond to aspects of geology shown in photographs, maps, diagrams and graphs and the completion of data and stimulus response questions using multiple-choice, short, structured and extended answers).

A Level:

Three exams at the end of two years. Geological Investigations (35%), Geological Principles and Processes (30%), Geological Applications (35%). Practical work is an intrinsic part of this course and fundamental to students studying science. You will complete 20+ specified practicals through the course and achieve a practical endorsement qualification which references your scientific ability.

University Opportunities

Past students have progressed to study specific vocational degrees in petroleum geology, environmental science, engineering geology, surveying and hydrogeology. There are also many other subject degree courses including earth sciences, anthropology, geology and geography.

Career Opportunities

If you are interested in the natural world around you, are good at investigating and problem solving, are numerate and articulate, have initiative and the ability to work in a team, then the exciting world of geology could be where your career lies. This course provides a good basis for many vocations, requiring initiative in thought and problem solving, for example in engineering, geochemistry, environmental geology, waste management and education.

Our MC Click scheme provides full time students (ages 16-19) on a Level 1, 2 or 3 study programmes with a free loan laptop to assist with their studies. Laptops can be collected at enrolment. Click here for more information about MC Click.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

Although not part of our full-time A Level study programme, students can work with our dedicated Work Experience Co-ordinator to secure a suitable placement, be that a one-off experience, or a more long-term placement.
