Stephanie Boocock and Shoona Rutledge
Stephanie Boocock and Shoona Rutledge met at Southbank Primary School as dinner ladies and decided to upskill together to fulfil their career ambitions of becoming professionals in the childcare and education sector.
Southbank Primary School asked Stephanie and Shoona to apply for roles within their 2-3 year old provision and both were successful. Stephanie and Shoona now work together as keyworkers for the nursery and once qualified will lead their own groups.
Stephanie said: “I didn’t expect to be where I am now but I’m thrilled that I decided to come back into education. I was very apprehensive and anxious about returning to College, especially as a mature student, but I’m so glad I did!
“Everyone at the College has been so lovely to me and very supportive. The whole class are one big family and I’ve made so many new friends. We all help and support each other to complete assignments- it’s a really lovely environment.
“My advice to anyone who wants to upskill or retrain is to go for it! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
Shoona said: “As a child I always used to play teachers with my toys and now I’m doing it for real! It’s absolutely crazy- I never thought I would be where I am today. My confidence has grown since starting the course and I’m learning lots of new skills and knowledge that I put into my work everyday at Southbank Primary School.
“We study topics such as child protection, safeguarding and children’s needs. I know that I have the skills I need to succeed in my role. I want to progress to the Level 3 qualification once I’ve completed my Level 2! I can’t thank Middlesbrough College enough for supporting me and helping me to achieve.”
