Onike Amodu

Meet Onike, one of our amazing lecturers at MC Digital!

Onike studied her Electrical and Electronic Engineering master’s degree at The Federal University of Technology Akure in Nigeria where she discovered a passion for computing and digital technologies. She then progressed to study a second master’s degree and moved across from Nigeria to the UK with her family to study Applied Artificial Intelligence at Teesside University.

Onike said: “When I was studying for my first degree in Electrical and Electrical Engineering, I loved learning about computing, and I realised I wanted to pursue a career in the digital sector. When I was studying in Nigeria, I found that I was a natural teacher and taught other members of the class elements of the degree, which helped me to also retain the information for my studies. “I wanted to pursue my passion for the digital industry and enhance my knowledge, so I decided to move across to the UK to study at University, and I was delighted when I was accepted for my master’s degree at Teesside University. Everything in the sector and everyone in industry told me to study artificial intelligence as this is where the industry is progressing, and I’m glad that I decided to.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my studies in computing and artificial intelligence and I’m passionate about the subjects and the digital sector. During my studies at Teesside University, I was offered a part-time teaching role at a College in London. I would complete my degree studies and then get a train to the Capital to teach. I’ve always enjoyed helping and supporting my classmates, and I discovered that I loved teaching students and sharing my knowledge and passion for the subject, and I really enjoyed this role.

“While completing my second master’s degree, I gained a job in industry at Flamingo Land in IT support. I think it’s important for teachers to spend time out in industry as it can help to inform your teaching, ensuring students are learning the skills needed for the working world. I had a brilliant time working at Flamingo Land and valued the contribution the experience brought to my career.

“When I was travelling to work on the bus, I met a student from Middlesbrough College who told me about his studies and the College experience. After speaking with the student, I immediately searched for the College online and was thrilled to see a vacancy for a lecturing role in their Digital Centre. I applied, was successful and I got the role! I was delighted.

“I’ve only been working at the College since the start of this term, but already I’m really enjoying the experience. All the staff are fabulous and are supportive of one another. The students also really care about their studies and are invested and motivated to come to College, which is great for me as their teacher as it makes me excited to come to work every day and teach them!

“I’m teaching on the digital Level 3 BTEC, T Level and University courses that the College offers. Teaching is something that I’ve always naturally done and something I enjoy doing, and I’m really enjoying working at Middlesbrough College. I would 100% recommend working here to any teacher or aspiring teacher.”
