Strength and Conditioning Sport Science Lecturer

“I’ve always been a sporty person, even from a young age! From 5 – 21 I attended regular gymnastics classes where I participated in competitions – it was a huge part of my life and something that really sparked my interest for a career in the sporting industry.”When I was 16 I enrolled at Middlesbrough College to study BTEC Sports Exercise Science – the course was amazing and I learnt so much!

“I then moved on to university before becoming a full-time Gymnastics Coach in Wiltshire. Following this I completed a Strength and Conditioning internship at Durham University which involved a great deal of coaching experience. It was there that I developed an interest in weightlifting. During a workshop at the end of my internship, I was scouted by Great Britain Coach, Dave Sawyer.

“Dave asked if I had ever thought about putting myself forward for weightlifting competitions. It was then that he helped me with both the training programme and competing – after six months of hard work, Dave said I would have a strong chance at competing in the Commonwealth Games if I worked for it.

“Fast forward some time and I found myself taking part in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast of Australia – I came 6th place which was such a proud moment. Doing so really inspired me to continue taking part in international competitions, and since then I have represented GB in the 49kilo for both the world and European championships. I absolutely love it!

“My role at Middlesbrough College came about after being approached by one of my former lecturers, Janine.

“I’ve now been at the College for two years and the time has flown! My job can be challenging but it’s absolutely worth it; seeing students thrive as they develop their skills is so great to see.

“It’s quite surreal that I started my time here as a student, and now I’m a teacher! It’s a brilliant environment to be in from both sides.

“My passion is teaching, so outside of work and competing I’m a personal trainer – it all keeps me very busy but I wouldn’t change it!”
