Barbering Lecturer
“I found myself in the barbering industry through quite an alternative route! I formerly worked as a Cable Instillation Contractor, so when my Mum opened a hair salon in Helmsley five years ago, I helped her to set it up.”After watching my Mum, I found myself picking up cutting techniques pretty quickly so decided to enrol onto the Level 2 Retrain Barbering course at Middlesbrough College. I really enjoyed the course so progressed onto Level 3, alongside working at the salon.
“Towards the end of last year I was contacted by one of my former tutors at the College and informed about a lecturing position that had become available, so decided to go for it!
“It’s been such a surreal experience to say that I started here as a student and am now employed as a member of staff teaching students on the course I completed – there are so many familiar faces around campus from then!
“Helping students to develop their skills and knowledge is rewarding, especially when those eureka moments occur. Though some of the modules have changed, I remember studying a lot of them from when I was a learner. It’s an inspiring role!
“It’s also great to be back at the College, the environment made it easy to fit back in straight away.
“I split my time working at the College with appointments at The Barber Lounge in Helmsley – I’m also an on-call Firefighter, so I’m pretty busy!
“When I’m not working I love spending time with my family and 6 dogs.
“I’d definitely recommend coming to Middlesbrough College – whether that’s as a student or a member of staff!”
