Danny Bell
Meet Danny Bell, a former Middlesbrough College student and now Construction Trainer within our Adult and Community Learning Department!
Danny started his journey at Middlesbrough College in 2014 as a carpentry & joinery student and then went on to work for a kitchen fitting firm as a joiner once his qualification was complete.
Danny said: “At 18, I was working at a kitchen fitting firm and was approached by the College to apply for a role as a construction IDA as a scheme to invite alumnus back into the College as staff. After completing the interview, I did not think I had got the job, however only a few hours later I was called to say I had got it – I was ecstatic!
“I knew the role at Middlesbrough College would set me up with a career, the role had brilliant benefits which I had never experienced at work before. Growing up I came from an underprivileged background where not many people are offered these kinds of opportunities, so I took it and ran with it.”
Danny has now worked at the College for just under 6 years and has recently progressed into a new role within the Adult and Community Learning (ACL) team as a Construction Trainer.
Danny continues: “I worked as a Construction IDA for around 5 years, but when I saw the role advertised with ACL, I knew I had to go for it. I was ready to switch things up and take on a new challenge. I have only been with ACL for 2 months; however, the role has already been so rewarding.
“Within my new role, I support people coming from the job centre who need construction training and employability support, it is so special to know you are directly making an impact on somebody’s life, and hopefully changing their future for the better. The programme I teach is only 3 weeks long, so the individuals I work with are changing regularly, I love that I am getting to work with and meet new people all the time.”
Since starting his career at Middlesbrough College, Danny has taken every opportunity to develop his skillset and make the most of the training programmes and qualifications offered to staff. Since starting on his new role at ACL, Danny has started to complete the Certificate in Further Education and Training, to enhance his teaching abilities and skillset even further.
Danny said: “I really enjoy working within Middlesbrough College, I have made some brilliant friends and there is always someone around to offer a helping hand when it is needed, which is a lovely feeling. To anyone considering a role at Middlesbrough College, I say – just go for it! It is a fantastic place to work and there’s opportunity to develop into new roles and progress in your career, plus you won’t meet nicer people.
“In my spare time I like going for walks on the Moors and spending time out in nature, plus I love getting to the Boro matches when I can!”
