This programme will help you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge necessary to excel within the dynamic fields of sports coaching, sports development, and fitness sectors. This will enable you to grow and adapt to the public, sport, and fitness demand within the industry.

The course considers a broad range of relevant disciplines, preparing you for future employment in the sectors. You will build a strong understanding of the physiological theory of sport and fitness, as well as physical activity in the local community, media, business and marketing, and various other topics. You will also develop your analytical and research techniques, which will support your practical skills and experience. You will explore sports coaching and leadership theories and apply this to practice. The course will also give the opportunity to reflect on your new skills and knowledge, bridging theory to practice. The programme also embeds the essential knowledge and expertise required to complete sports coaching and fitness qualifications, namely Level 1 and 2 Sports Coaching and Level 1 Level 2 Fitness Instruction qualifications.
You are then able to complete the external examinations to obtain these qualifications.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved 48 UCAS tariff points. The points can be from a range of Level 3 qualifications (NVQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3, A Level or relevant T Level qualification).

  • Alternatively, you may possess a vocational equivalent qualification (Level 3), such as VTCT, CYQ or Active IQ.
  • You must also have Maths and English GCSE at minimum C grade (or equivalent
  • Applicants with industry/professional experience will also be considered on an individual basis. All applicants will be interviewed.
  • Successful applicants will need an enhanced satisfactory DBS check.

Successful students may choose to progress to the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching, Development and Fitness, a one year top-up programme also delivered at the College, to gain a full honours degree award.

Fees payable directly to Middlesbrough College, £6,900 per year.

Sports students will learn theoretical based study in the classroom, whilst taking part in a range of sport and fitness activities. Taught by specialist tutors and coaches, many of which are ex professionals in their field, you'll benefit from fantastic facilities including an AstroTurf pitch, a strength and conditioning suite and a physiology lab.
