This course is intended to be used in nursing and residential homes, hospices and community settings including the individual’s own home and GP surgeries.

It does not cover the use and administration of intra-venous medication. This unit assesses support for use of medication in social care settings.

It covers broad types, classifications and forms of medication as well as safe handling and storage. It addresses practical support for use of medication that reflects social care principles and values and includes the need for accurate recording and reporting.

This unit applies to medications used by and for individuals both prescribed and non-prescribed.

Entry requirements

Candidates must be employed in the adult health and social care sector.

This can be paid or voluntary.

The Health and Social Care Diploma (QCF) supports progression in employment in management, social work, mental health work, rehabilitation work or health.

You could also progress to the Level 3 or 4 Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF).


Please note, this course is a full cost course and therefore there is no fee remission available to any student.
