The first unit explores our awareness of crimes which often go ‘under the radar’. 

The second unit offers an introduction to the various theoretical explanations to criminal and deviant behaviour.  Is there such as thing as a ‘born’ criminal?  Is criminal behaviour learned? 

The third and fourth units are taken in the second year. With unit 3 taking you on a journey through the legal system by examining those who work within it, covering techniques such as DNA, CCTV, eye witness testimony and criminal profiling. 

The fourth and final unit has a huge emphasis on the different agencies which operate within our criminal justice system such as the police, the prison service and probation.  This unit will help you to develop a critical awareness of some of the contemporary issues that these agencies face today.

September- June

The course is assessed by both controlled assessment and examination.  With each year having an external exam and a controlled assessment taken in the summer term. Each of these four assessments are equally weighted and will form the basis of the certificate or diploma grade.

University Opportunities: Previous students have progressed to study at HE level in subjects such as Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Social and Public Sector Development, Policing, Youth and Community Studies and Law. 

Career Opportunities: These are often available within the criminal justice system such as the police, prison and probation service, youth work, support work in sectors such as women’s refuges, civil services, housing, community worker and social worker.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
