This course is an alternative route to studying A Levels and puts science into a vocational context. It is a full time, stand-alone two year course that is equivalent to three A Levels. You will cover a wide range of units within areas of biology, chemistry and physics, with a range of practical and theory in the majority of units. Assessment is through a mixture of external examination, in both year 1 and year 2, and also completion of controlled assessments or assignments.

There are six mandatory units and seven specialist units.
The course covers a range of units in biology, chemistry and physics. It also contains specialist units such as Disease and infection, Biomedical sciences, Forensic Traffic Collison Investigation. There are a number of practical units in which internally assessed assignments are written.

Entry requirements

It is recommended that students achieve a grade 5 in science (combined or trilogy), maths and English GCSE (grade 4s will be reviewed on an individual case) and 2 other GCSEs at grade 4 or above.

The course is assessed continuously throughout the two years and is a mixture of external exams, controlled assessments and internally assessed assignments.

University Opportunities: Past students have progressed to study degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, crime scene science, dietetics, radiography, paramedic sciences and forensic science.
Career Opportunities: Career opportunities include chemical science, laboratory technician, research or development, management, environmental professions and conservation.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
