This qualification meets the needs of students who work or aspire to work in children's social care settings.

It is also for people who are restricted from enrolling onto apprentice programs as they are not in paid employment or it there is no relevant apprentice framework.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but the College must carry out an initial assessment of each student prior to the start of the programme to ensure that they are entered for an appropriate type and level of qualification.

You must have literacy skills at a minimum of level 1, along with basic computer skills.

Experience within childcare or a level 2 childcare qualification is not essential but would be of benefit to students who wish to undertake this course.

As this course covers workplace assessment you must be employed in children's and young peoples social care settings or be able to confirm a placement.

You will undertake and require a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS check).

A variety of assessment methods will be used which will include assignment work, questions, professional discussion and reflective accounts.

Upon completion of this course you can progress onto the Fd Early Years course, Fd Working with Children & Young People course or the Level 5 Diploma Leadership and Management in Children's and Young Peoples Services.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.


If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Advanced Learner Loan: If you are aged 19-23 or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees. However, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of the fee. For information on Advanced Learning Loans go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans/.

Please note any fee shown excludes any additional costs to learners for any necessary equipment, materials, uniforms or any visit/residential that learners are required to participate in.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
